Fantasy Hockey 2024-25

ESPN NHL FHL

In each NHL season I go all in on just one fantasy team, second or sixth place it does not matter I give it my best to win each of the 22 weeks from October until March either for a playoff seeding or as a spoiler.

This season randomly placed in an ESPN FHL named “Chicago Pro H2H Points League” and began the draft in ninth place, selecting in the ninth and twelve slots and with 10 and 11 having auto picks it essentially on the clock provided two consecutive picks for me.

So fortunately I was able to select both Misters Nylander & Marner, two of Toronto’s premier players with possible line stacking possibilities and endless fantasy points with my first overall selections.

I always prefer to draft Sabres Dahlin early but he was listed as injured and he was taken before my next two picks came up, so I consoled myself with Buffalo’s top scorers Misters Thompson & Tuch who are playoff bound this season and will rack up the points.

Possibly too many Sabres but I also selected the next best thing to Defenseman Dahlin and that is Owen Powers and Mattias Samuelsson, going with… live by the sword, perish by the sword.

I have obtained blocking defensemen that some team managers overlook because they do not get the pretty assist points, and with the waiver wire transactions beginning this morning, we are off and skating .

October fourth is a long ways from today, plenty of time to enter a public league, or create your own at ESPN to participate with fellow fans who also believe in their managerial tactics, talent, and skill to win an ESPN FHL Championship.

  1. Personally, I think you’ve got a contending team and not just because you were able to get Nylander and Marner.

I’m glad to see you have the Buffalo goalie because I believe he is going to have a stellar season.

The other day I entered a league in the ESPN FHL and waited and waited for others to participate (it kept turning over) but to no avail. I guess I will try again over the weekend to find a league to play in. Maybe closer to the start of the season, there will be more interest.

    1. Thanks, I am not sure how I will fare over the course of the season, but I like my chances.

Whoops, I already dropped, and put him on my watch list, have to make room for consistent fantasy point generators, goaltenders in fantasy are high risk, high reward type of players.

I am watching to see if Mr. Levi will have a great season, and if he does I will pick him back up, easily I might add because most team managers are loath to let go and switch goalies once they drafted one with a high pick.

I do not use goaltenders, I have in the past, but statistically I fare better without inserting them into my lineup.

I am surprised you cannot be placed into a league on ESPN, keep trying, I look forward to seeing how you do in your draft and throughout the season.

      1. It worked! Finally all the slots were filled last night in the league I had signed up for.

It is a 10-team beginner roto league.

Unfortunately a number of team owners weren’t present live and their picks were made automatic by the system. I say unfortunately because I think it quite often favours the non-attendees to have their picks made this way. Oh well.

Also working sort of against me was that my picks were back-to-back, so I had to be really ready.

I did have my prepared lists ready of F, D and G players that I wanted to draft.

In this league Auston Matthews was picked first in round 1, followed by Connor McDavid. No surprises.

You and I have some overlap.

My pick in the first round was William Nylander.

I also acquired (in no particular order): Quinn Hughes, Tage Thompson, Kreider, Boeser, Saros, Bobrovsky, Devon Levi, Kopitar, Tarasenko (begrudgingly), Rasmus Andersson, Boone Jenner, Morgan Rielly, Ryan O’Reilly, Owen Power, Jack Quinn, Max Domi, Huberdeau, and one or two more.

      2. Congrats!!

I have no idea how to play in a rotisserie league, I have always just played H2H on ESPN FHL so I looked it up…

Rotisserie, or “Roto,” is the most common way to play fantasy hockey. In this scoring type, teams are ranked from first to last in each statistical category. Points are then awarded according to the order in each category, then totaled to determine an overall score and league rank.

I really still don’t get it, I am a visual learner so perhaps if I watch a roto league in action I can figure it out, I hope.

Yes, I see a few familiar faces, Misters Nylander, Thompson, O’Reilly, Power, and although I did draft Devon, I had already dropped him along with my other goaltender Saturday morning.

What is the name of the League your participating in? It is ESPN fantasy hockey right?

We are pretty cool to both select Mr. Nylander with our first pick, what position did you start out in?

        Well done!

      3. Thanks! I have to tell you, it was a huge relief to get it done then I was stuck trying to figure out how to drop and add players, sigh. I’ll figure it out.

“Roto” scoring I had looked up as well and after understanding it I decided it (over the other options) was best for me.

My team is indeed with ESPN fantasy hockey –Tampa Bay Beginner Roto League.

My team is PG Team (I know, very creative huh? LOL).

The position I started in was last. It was painful watching players being taken before it was my turn. And picking was tricky because I had my next turn immediately after my first (back-to-back) because it was a snake draft style.
