Edmonton Hangs On

Special Teams & play to protect lead wins it for Oilers

Edmonton 2 – Dallas 1 (Semifinals Oilers 4-2)  Edmonton scored two power play goals on the team’s three SOG during the first period while Dallas blanked on the three power plays in the game and finished 0-14 with the man advantage for the series.

Oilers netminder Skinner played the best game of his playoff career last night ensuring Edmonton’s berth in the Stanley Cup Finals as the Oilers after scoring twice with four minutes left in the first period could manage only seven more SOG for the entire game.

Florida Back to Finals

Atlantic Division No. 1 Seed Panthers Advance to Cup Finals

Florida 2 – New York 1 (Semifinals Panthers 4-2)  No empty net, no power play goals, no officiating drama, two superb goaltenders, and most game statistics were pretty much even across the board save two, “blocked shots” & SOG, the Panthers’ commitment to return to the Finals was evident indeed.

The Rangers did not generate enough offensive zone time and SOG to score and what these low-scoring one-goal games highlight is the absolute necessity to be able to “get the next one” especially in these pressure filled playoff matchups.

Edmonton Goal Eruption

Oilers Score Five in Victory

Edmonton 5 – Dallas 2 en (Semifinals tied 2-2)  The Stars scored early and quickly as they built the dreaded “two-goal” lead and were up 2-0 less than six minutes into the game.

Edmonton was fortunate their first goal was not called back for goaltender interference as Oilers’ Mr. Nurse used his stick to steer/throw a Stars player by his sweater into and on top of Dallas netminder Oettinger before another Oilers put the puck into the gaping unprotected net.

Edmonton scored legitimately to tie the score at two a few minutes before the first period ended, in the second period Edmonton scorched Dallas with a short-handed and even strength goal to take the 4-2 lead after two periods of play.

Less than two minutes remaining in the game and the Oilers score an empty netter, earn the win and a tied series making this a three-game series heading back to Texas.

Florida victorious in Overtime

Florida 3 – New York 2 OT (Semifinals series tied 2-2)  The Panthers’ power play continues to click as they scored two power plays last night improving to 5 out of 15 with the man advantage this series, including Mr. Reinhart scoring Florida’s playoff overtime power play goal at 1:12 becoming the quickest in their history.

After scoring on the power play and taking the 1-0 lead after the first period and outshooting the Panthers 13-11, the Rangers struggled to find the net managing a meager five SOG for the second and third periods with no shots in overtime.

No one doubts the outstanding goaltending abilities of New York netminder Mr. Shesterkin as he absolutely shines during these playoffs, but Rangers’ forwards Panarin, Kreider, Goodrow, Wheeler (back from injury), and Wennberg combined took all of 2 SOG last night which is not good enough to win the series.

Texas Hat Trick & Victory

Dallas 5 – Edmonton 3 en (Semifinals Stars 2-1)  Edmonton through their own admissions did not want this game bad enough. With statements, “we just let off the gas a little bit”, “they pushed and we didn’t”, and then their Head Coach saying, “we were just kind of hoping things would just continue sailing”.

After the Oilers built the dreaded “two-goal” lead, Dallas scored three goals in 3:33 minutes during the second period for the 3-2 lead but Edmonton scored their third goal of the game in the last minute of the second period to tie the game.

The Stars scored shortly before the midway point of the third period for the 4-3 lead and with approximately two minutes remaining in the game Dallas scored an empty netter for the win and series lead.

Mr. Robertson’s hat trick for the Stars was the first hat trick scored by a “Stars” player in the Semifinals since Mr. Ciccarelli in 1981.
