Around the League Last Night

Three Games

Capitals 3 – Predators 2  Nashville played so well on the road versus a very well coached Washington team that nearly all statistical categories for the game were similar and if not for “Ovie” assisting and scoring for the Capitals this game belonged to the Predators.

Red Wings 4 (en) – Blackhawks 1  Another home loss for Chicago going 1-4-0 that has created a dismal start to their season and Detroit has won their second consecutive game to climb one game above .500% in the standings.

Golden Knights 4 (en) – Oilers 2  The Knights won their first game of the season on the road with their fifth attempt and Edmonton continues to lose at home and win on the road.

Sabres 5 – Senators 1  Buffalo hosted Ottawa, and in a physical game the Sabres scored two power play goals, with UPL giving up one goal on 38 Senators SOG for an impressive .974% winning save percentage. Note: Rasmus Dahlin earned his 300th and 301st points in last night’s victory.

Mr. Thompson scores off his shoulder with a pass from Mr. Tuch

Maple Leafs 4 – Bruins 0  Toronto impressively ends their eight game winless streak versus Boston as Maple Leafs netminder Stolarz stones the Bruins all game including six Boston power plays.

Flames 3 (OT) – Canadiens 2  Montreal absorbed a bitter home loss after scoring on the power play and shorthanded then scoring the third goal that through one of those coach’s challenges and technology highlighted a Canadiens player a millimeter or so offsides, then Flames Mr. Coronato ties the game and wins it in overtime.

Carolina 6 (en) – Flyers 4  After taking 10 SOG and scoring on the power play in the first period Philadelphia then proceeded to take 3 SOG during the second and also for the third period as the Hurricanes launched 35 SOG to take command and win.

Islanders 4 (SO) – Penguins 3  The Islanders took no shots in overtime but scored the only tally in the shoot-out as Pittsburgh’s road woes continue plummeting the Penguins further into the Eastern Conference basement.

Blues 3 – Lightning 2  St. Louis had two of their players score their first of the season to propel the Blues one game over .500% and the Lightning dropped their third in a row to fall to one game over .500%.

Kings 5 – Wild 1  Minnesota scored first taking the 1-0 lead near the halfway point of the second period but the Kings who took only 2 SOG during the first period exploded for five goals on 26 SOG during the second and third period for the win.

Jets 3 (en) – Hockey Club 0  Winnipeg continues to dominate the NHL by increasing their perfect road record to 6-0-0 by shutting out the Hockey Club in Utah as the Jets have only lost once this season.

Avalanche 6 (en) – Kraken 3  Colorado is struggling to get to .500% but managed to crack the Kraken open for a win as Seattle drops their fourth in a row.

Canucks 5 – Ducks 1  Both teams scored on the power play and Anaheim scored first but Vancouver dined on duck last night as this game highlights two Pacific Division teams at opposite ends of the spectrum.

Sharks 2 (OT) – Blue Jackets 1  Celebrating Celebrini’s return San Jose gets out shot 48 to 24 during regulation but took more SOG during overtime earning the Sharks their fourth win of the season getting up to a .500%  home record.

Two games, two shutouts

Kings 3 (en) – Predators 0  Los Angeles now has a winning road record after Goaltender Kuemper stopped all 16 SOG that Nashville was able to rivet on net.

The Predators are off to one of their worst starts in franchise history and the Kings are sitting in second place in the Pacific Division.

Devils 3 – Oilers 0  New Jersey took 3 SOG in the second period and scored, then took 3 SOG in the third period and scored another goal meanwhile Edmonton launched 18 SOG over the same time period and did not score.

New Jersey dished out four hits for every one Edmonton managed, each team earned a power play with the Devils capitalizing and the Oilers would not, goaltending was key as New Jersey netminder Allen was outstanding and his counterpart at the other end of the ice was not.

Heroes and Scapegoats

Sabres 1 – Red Wings 2  It is difficult to watch loss after loss…Buffalo played well but could not bury any of their quality chances and if not for the herculean shorthanded efforts of Mr. Tuch the Sabres would have been shut out. I am officially putting Lindy Rough on the hot seat.

Panthers 4 (en) – Stars 2  Global Series Finland hockey fans received it all, two games, a powerful defending cup champion versus a similarly strong opponent, a high scoring game, a low scoring pull the goalie game, at times good officiating, fighting, and a sweep.

Bruins 3 (en) – Flyers 0  Philadelphia would benefit from more shots on goal even though this was a close 2-0 battle and Boston’s second goal came after Philadelphia created some good chances in Boston’s end then allowed the Bruins to rush up ice and score. Note: Philadelphia Goaltender Ersson left the game after stopping all eight shots he faced with a lower body injury in the first period.

Blackhawks 4 (SO) – Kings 3  Chicago mars Los Angeles’ perfect home record by tying the game with 30.3 seconds remaining in the third period and after a scoreless overtime two ‘Hawks out deke and scorch the Kings netminder for goals and the win.

Capitals 7 – Blue Jackets 2  Head Coach of the year front runner Spencer Carbery has Washington looking like a cup contender early as the Capitals win eight times in their first 10 games and had Columbus goaltender Tarasov literally spinning like a top.

Senators 3 (en) – Kraken 0  Ottawa’s first goal was challenged unsuccessfully, both goaltenders played an outstanding 60 minutes, both teams penalty killers were top notch, and statistically similar except for a possible slow whistle (I thought the goal was good) and a deflection were the differences last night.

Penguins 3 (en) – Canadiens 1  Pittsburgh is dominating Montreal this season scoring twice as many goals in their first two of three meetings in 2024 with the Captain scoring twice inspiring the Pittsburgh announcer to shout “Crosby has a pair” and after watching Mr. Crosby play over the seasons…I agree.

Blues 4 (en) – Maple Leafs 2  An unfortunate penalty leading to St. Louis’ third tally cost Toronto this game as the Blues were able to weather the 17 SOG 4 third period Toronto storm to get to .500% winning percentage.

Predators 5 (en x2) – Avalanche 2  Power play specialist Stamkos is finding his groove as Nashville scores on both of its power play opportunities and twice into the empty net as the Predators drag Colorado down in the standings to Nashville’s seeding.

Canucks 3 – Sharks 2  Vancouver survives their Conference dwellers home effort as San Jose nearly thwarts the Canucks in their first of four meetings this season.

Knights 4 (OT) – Hockey Club  Utah skates into Nevada and earns another road point as the Knights required overtime to subdue their Conference opponent.
