Oldfan says to me that the Leafs won four Cups with Punch Imlach as coach but didn’t get along well with all the players. Some he liked, some he didn’t. Maybe that was/is common.
In fact, says Oldfan, Punch Imlach almost ruined the Big M (Oldfan’s favourite NHL player) when he was coaching the Leafs towards the end. Mr. Mahovlich had a nervous breakdown as a result of Imlach’s prodding. Also, he refused to pronounce Frank Mahovlich’s name properly. Imlach just said he couldn’t but there could have been more to it, says Oldfan.
