No NHL Experience, No Problem

Sabres 3 (en) – Senators 2 OT Ottawa the sparkling capital of Canada hosted Buffalo last night and even without any starters the Sabres were still able to win over a Senators team that was just as thin with the exception of goaltending.

Ottawa’s goaltenders Ullmark and Tokarski with the later still wearing his Buffalo mask, which seemed odd to see atop a Senators sweater, the time was split evenly between Buffalo’s former net minders, but to no avail as Buffalo scored an empty netter and in overtime for the victory.

From 2:30 pm this afternoon until 10 pm this evening there are 10 games to consume, beginning with Buffalo and EHC Red Bull Munchen making history with the grand opening of the SAP Garden in Munich, Germany, dab smack in the middle of Octoberfest (Sept 21- Oct 6).

Last night during a team dinner, Sabres Rasmus Dahlin was named Captain, the humbled defenseman explained it’s an honor, the proudest moment of his life and knowing how big the responsibility is, he is motivated beyond words and looking forward to leading us into the playoffs.

Two games back-to-back with empty netters is quite a feat.
Was there a reason given post-game why Sens Goaltender Dustin Tokarski was still wearing his Buffalo goalie mask?
Congrats to Rasmus Dahlin for being named Captain and of course another question comes to mind, that being I wonder how often a defenseman is bestowed this honour in the league.
(My apologies for being late to the game reading and commenting on your newest articles. I was out of town as of mid-week last week, returning home on Saturday, then had a number of family obligations which pretty much kept me busy and mainly off the computer.)

I know that sometimes when an AHL goaltender is called up to the parent club he may not have a “spare” mask painted with the NHL club’s color/colours so he will don the only one he uses, so I suppose a similar situation for goaltender Tokarski as he was probably moved so quickly he has not had time to have a custom Senators mask made.

First name to come to mind is my man defenseman Jim Schoenfeld who was Captain for us here along the Lake, I will have to count how many since 1917 and get back to you, lol.

Since 1917? I’ll guess five were Captains. 🙂
Defenseman Dion Phaneuf was Captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs when I started watching the games.
Way way back in 1917 (till 1984-1985) there was only ever one Leafs Captain and there were no Alternate Captains (except in 1963-64). I also just learned that historically, for the longest time, Alternate Captaincy was given out to only two Leafs players. That was until 1998-1999. Then starting with the 2008-2009 NHL season it exploded and there were as many as six Alternates. Quite excessive, imho. Since then the number has varied widely from 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6. I tried looking up the reason why the Ottawa Senators Goaltender wore his Sabres mask in that recent game and came across this interesting article and learned from it:
